Alopecia (baldness, from Latin. alopecia - baldness, hair loss) - abnormal hair loss which leads to thinning or complete loss in certain head or torso areas. The most common types of alopecia - androgenic, diffusive or symptomatic, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, dermatophytosis, scar alopecia.
Causes of alopecia are genetic – it's mainly the fault of harmful effect on the hair follicles of an active form of the male sex hormone testosterone — dihydrotestosterone, which is produced under the influence of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, contained in hair follicles. The penetration of dihydrotestosterone into the follicle cells causes their degeneration and, finally, hair dystrophy. The hair remains on the head but it becomes thinner, shorter, colourless (fine hair) and can't cover the skin of the entire head anymore, which is why baldness occurs. After 10-12 years after the condition's onset, the inflamed hair follicles' roots are filled with connective tissue and not even very fine hair can grow out of them anymore.
